Economic Development Officer for the Town of Innisfail

John Powell leads strategic initiatives in business attraction, investment readiness, and long-term community growth. Since joining the Town in early 2024, John has worked closely with municipal leadership, local entrepreneurs, and regional partners to strengthen Innisfail’s economic position and support sustainable development across multiple sectors.
With an extensive background in business development and strategic planning, John brings a results-driven, collaborative approach to economic growth. He is deeply committed to helping existing businesses expand and thrive, ensuring they feel supported, valued, and confident in choosing to remain in Innisfail. His work also focuses on welcoming new investors, advancing workforce development, and promoting the community’s advantages as a central Alberta hub with exceptional transportation access, infrastructure, and quality of life.
Prior to joining Innisfail, John served as Land & Economic Development Officer for the City of Red Deer; Director of Economic Development & Tourism for the District of Tumbler Ridge, BC; and Economic Development Coordinator for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen (RDOS) in Penticton and Okanagan Falls, BC. Earlier in his career, he contributed to Thames Strategy in London, England, coordinating multi-agency economic, environmental, and heritage initiatives.
John holds a Master’s degree in Tourism Management and is dedicated to positioning Innisfail for continued prosperity while safeguarding the town’s unique character, values, and sense of community.

Michelle McFadden is a Certified Management Consultant (CMC-Canada), Business Coach, and Entrepreneurial Trainer with more than 20 years of experience helping entrepreneurs build profitable and sustainable businesses. She specializes in grant navigation, business planning, marketing strategy, growth navigation, and AI training that empowers owners to take confident action.
Michelle has supported hundreds of businesses across Central Alberta and is recognized with multiple awards for excellence in business development and mentorship. Her background spans financial leadership, business ownership, sales & marketing and much more, experience she now brings directly to the entrepreneurs of Innisfail through the RBSN.

In partnership with the Town of Innisfail, the Regional Business Support Network provides high-value business support services at absolutely no cost to local entrepreneurs. Business owners gain access to personalized one-on-one advisory sessions, strategic guidance, and navigation of funding and growth opportunities—support designed to strengthen operations and accelerate success.

As an added benefit, every participating business also receives a professional promotional video valued at over $6,000, completely free. This high-quality video is yours to keep and use across your website and social media, and is also shared through community and regional channels to help expand your visibility and reach.
