Innisfail Energy Hub

Powering a Cleaner, Community-Driven Energy Future

Strategically positioned within Alberta’s evolving energy landscape, Innisfail has played a meaningful role in the province’s energy sector for generations. As the industry adapts to new technologies and sustainability priorities, the Town of Innisfail is committed to reducing energy consumption, lowering environmental impact, and supporting a balanced, forward-looking energy economy.

The creation of the Innisfail Energy Hub (IEH) reflects this commitment. Developed through collaboration with the Energy Futures Lab (EFL), the IEH is a citizen-led initiative focused on community-based energy education, innovation, and practical action. From late 2022 through 2023, Innisfail worked exclusively with EFL to explore opportunities that align local priorities with Alberta’s broader energy transition.

Today, the Energy Hub supports initiatives that improve energy literacy, encourage informed participation, and identify realistic pathways for community involvement in emerging energy solutions. This work positions Innisfail as an active contributor to Alberta’s energy future—one grounded in collaboration, innovation, and local benefit.

Supporting Local Energy Innovation

Innisfail’s commitment to clean and efficient energy is demonstrated through tangible projects already in place. The Innisfail Solar Farm, a 25-megawatt installation developed with Elemental Energy, became operational in 2020. The project provides direct community benefits through lease revenue, property taxes, and a dedicated community development fund—contributing approximately $190,000 annually, with $20,000 allocated each year to local community groups.

Municipal energy efficiency efforts further reinforce this commitment. Projects such as the Innisfail Twin Arena Retrofit and solar installations on municipal buildings have delivered measurable reductions in energy use, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions—supporting both fiscal responsibility and environmental stewardship.
